Why c!Dream should (and probably will be) redeemed

Hi! I’m bad with intros. You’ve read the title, so, let’s start with the definitions.

In this essay, we are considering the popularized definition of “redemption” instead of the classical one, which is, as per the Oxford Dictionary, “the act of saving or state of being saved from the power of evil; the act of redeeming.” That’s not however the way the word is used in fandom and media.

The definition of redemption I’ll be working with in this essay is not forgiveness by the people who c!Dream has hurt, nor is it removing himself entirely from his past actions, but moreso the decision to change for the better and abandon destructive mindsets for himself and others.

A “redemption” in a narrative sense would be circumstances and a character arc that would allow that kind of healing and betterment.

I’d like to start this off by the fact that being “irredeemable”, in this sense, also doesn’t exist; redemption is a thing of conditions and choice, not of being allowed by someone else. You can’t gatekeep healing from people who seek it, just to be clear, and that even goes for people who have done terrible things.

Since I understand there is a lot of concern for c!Dream’s past actions, here is a post from people who are much more fit than me to speak on the matter, about the way in which they see a possible c!Dream redemption arc.

Another disclaimer, I am not going to be considering c!Dream only from the perspective of c!Tommy in this essay. c!Dream appears in other people’s perspectives and he himself has his own, unseen perspective. As a character, he is an individual person in his own right rather than just the antagonist of c!Tommy’s story, and so I do not have much concern for their narratives intertwining too much should this writing choice occur.

I’d also like to note that redemption is, in this sense, always a positive thing for everyone involved - someone who’s been prone to doing bad things in the past deciding not to do them anymore and try to change, or just simply heal enough to consider it, isn’t going to have a long-term negative effect in any of the characters, but rather the other way around. Healing is an unlimited resource, and the victims do not have to heal first for the person who hurt them to consider being better.

Here’s a well-written thread on Twitter that elaborates a bit to finish off this point, and let’s move on to actually talking about redemption in the context of the Dream SMP, and c!Dream specifically.

Why a c!Dream redemption arc is not only a good writing choice, but in this case the only good writing choice;

c!Dream, as we all know, has been subject to mental and physical abuse to the point of straight up torture by both c!Sam and c!Quackity (to different extents). He has been in indescribable amounts of suffering for the past 74 days at the time this essay will be published. That is six and something times the duration of the entire exile arc in canon.

Whatever the interpretation of his words in prison is, what is undeniable is first of all the fact his mental stability is absolutely crushed at this point, second that no human being could possibly ever deserve to undergo this, and third, his stay in the prison is showing off his humanity and making him out to be sympathetic.

Now, consider this; how would it feel if c!Tommy died at the end of the exile arc? Empty, there would be no catharsis to such an end, especially because of all of the hurt he’d gone through. Objectively, a bad writing choice.

Let’s compare, narratively of course, this situation to the prison arc. Even though I would never say one of them is “better” or “worse” than the other, since both are terrible and undeserved, c!Dream’s current state checks off all of the boxes that would make his death unsatisfying in the storyline; even if people want him gone, there would still be the dissatisfaction at the current build-up and why they even did it in the first place (it really wasn’t necessary to anyone else’s story to make him out as a victim, and yet they did) if they were planning to kill him off anyways. And since the prison arc is naturally meant to induce sympathy, even from an angst perspective it would simply not make sense within the themes and writing of the plot.

So, c!Dream can’t die, and he also can’t stay in the prison forever - the build-up must lead to something, which is logically a breakout. Great… what now?

Well, the Dream SMP prides itself in accurate representation of trauma and mental instability, specifically cc!Tommy and cc!Dream who have pulled it off incredibly during the exile arc.

Now, undoubtedly, after the prison, c!Dream is going to be just terribly traumatized- considering the writers’ past creative decisions, would it make sense for him to play the role of a dangerous, heartless villain in other people’s stories, while completely ignoring the logical fallout of what he’s been through?

In my mind, no. The most possible result is that cc!Dream is going to rightfully portray someone who’s been hurt so much he is broken, scared and tortured into submissions over months of agony and slowly stripping away of his agency, his dignity, his humanity. And that is… not going to be pretty, nor is he going to be in any way the same as before.

After everything, I’d be surprised if he can properly look at shears without shaking. That’s not villain behaviour, that’s the behaviour of someone who needs help.

Which leads me to another point, which is relatability. Believe me or not, there are people out there who heavily relate to c!Dream because they have been through things that allow them to see themselves in the character - abandonment, mental illness, etc. - or who have had destructive mindsets they have struggled to let go of in the past.

To them, as well as to the viewer, redeeming c!Dream could actually be a very good example, showcasing that anyone who has done bad things or has been hurt in the past can learn that it is possible to be better, to move on, to not be stuck in a loop but to actively seek help and then use that support to find the path to healing.

Making c!Dream a better person, who in a way, wins over his past, over his trauma, over the hurt he’s caused, and manages to actually get better… is inspiring, in a sense. It shows that you can abandon unhealthy mindsets, you can find a support group of people who care about you, you can make your life better simply by deciding to be better and then sticking to that, no matter how difficult the process.

This is why I believe that redeeming c!Dream would not be bad writing, but quite the opposite, and that the prison arc is an obvious set-up. Alright, but how does that work with the character? How could someone so widely hated mentally improve in such a seemingly violent and terrible environment? Would it even make sense within the context of c!Dream’s character so far? Well,

Why c!Dream has the capacity for healing and the Dream SMP the ability to provide it;

First of all, let’s remind ourselves that through c!Dream’s entire spiral he wasn’t ever directly given a chance to change. He was regarded as someone to defeat in order to accomplish a happy ending, or as someone who needed to be removed in order to achieve power on the SMP. Ever since the 16th, which is when the corruption of the character is the most obvious, there have been no attempts to reach out or to help him. I do not blame the characters for this - I am simply pointing out that since it has never happened before, we do not know how he would respond, and that, after everything he’s been through, any bit of kindness or compassion towards him will be a new concept he will have to learn to deal with somehow.

This point is especially driven home by the fact that both c!Quackity and c!Sam would often tell him he is a monster who deserves nothing but to suffer, and that what he’s going through is never going to amount to all the hurt he’s caused - basically removing any possibility for ever getting better (because by this logic, he doesn’t deserve support, and he doesn’t deserve to get better) from his line of sight.

He also hasn’t had a support system since shortly after the 16th, when his friends left him over c!George’s dethronement and made no effort to mend their relationship afterwards. c!Dream isn’t used to having allies and people on his side, but to being hated; again, wouldn’t that mean positive reinforcement could very well be all he needs to make the choice?

His bad mindsets - attachments are weakness, ends always justify the means, people will consider you a bad person no matter what you do - have been continuously proven right by his environment, even in prison. Any kind of subversion, plus an explanation as to why they are wrong, could be of great help to c!Dream.

Just another disclaimer; I do not believe c!Dream would change thanks to the treatment in prison, but rather despite it. His mental stability is non-existent at that point, and in order to get better he needs genuine emotional support from the people around him as well as to heal before he can redeem himself.

Alright, but… c!Dream has hurt a lot of people. Who would be fit to help him?

Let’s start off with the worst option and why it’s impossible the writers would even attempt this; c!Tommy.

c!Tommy has no responsibility to help or ever forgive c!Dream - not to say he could. The two, as it is, would drag each other down instead of helping in any capacity, and only make matters worse. The two of them shouldn’t even interact in the best case scenario - the best thing for both of them would be if they got enough healing and support individually that they could live around each other and not get their trauma or toxic habits triggered when interacting for whatever purpose of the plot.

So, if not c!Tommy (and c!Tubbo neither by extension), who could redeem c!Dream?

Well, he can’t do it on his own for sure. Being in nature with animals is nice, but further isolation from other people would merely help with the prison trauma, not with the state of his tendencies when interacting with others. He, once again, needs positive reinforcement from other people for him to heal properly.

There are two main options for this in my mind, and then there’s a few individuals he could also find comfort in, including people from both groups or those unaligned.

1) Kinoko Kingdom

From the people of this new country, c!Dream has never negatively interacted with c!Karl before, he has never hurt c!George and he hasn’t directly harmed c!Sapnap. Although the relationship with his old friend group could be difficult to rekindle, none of them have grudges against him that are too personal, and they have been canonically close friends since the beginning of the SMP, so it would be very much possible to rebuild burnt bridges. They’d be familiar, and with the addition of c!Karl they could be a good source of comfort for c!Dream after he either breaks out or is released from prison - just gotta convince c!Sapnap not to kill him first.

2) The Syndicate

From the Syndicate, c!Dream has never directly interacted with c!Nikki, and from what I know of her character she never seemed to be very affected by his actions - even doing his work for him when he was planning to burn down the L’Mantree. c!Techno is an ally who doesn’t have anything against him, and as for c!Ranboo, here is why I believe c!Dream being in the Syndicate could be positively influential on his character arc as well;

c!Ranboo and c!Philza have had a conversation about change, during which c!Ranboo made it clear he thinks everyone can change except for c!Dream; who, in his mind, is “too deep down the rabbit hole”. c!Philza replied that he thinks anyone can change if given enough time.

… you see what I’m getting at?

c!Dream has been implied to be an ally to c!Ranboo’s enderwalk state (or the state when he has access to his full memory), and hence would most likely not behave negatively towards him at all. While it might make it more difficult for c!Ranboo to deal with his own issues, it might also give him more motivation to get to the bottom of it as well, especially since he now has access to the person who, presumably, started this all. While this is going on, c!Dream would show himself in a much different light than c!Ranboo sees himin, which could lead to confusion, realization of the flaws in his own logic, and hence, positive character development.

Here’s a great post about why c!Techno as a character could be a great asset in c!Dream’s healing process & redemption, and why there is not much need to worry about him not knowing or finding out about c!Dream’s actions.

Of Kinoko Kingdom and the Syndicate, as far as I know, neither c!Tommy nor c!Tubbo have ever been directly involved with these groups, nor are they planning to.

Another important point to make is that, while c!Tommy needs to be kept away from c!Dream in order to heal properly, the same goes for c!Quackity and c!Sam in c!Dream’s case. While c!Quackity has high chances to interact with either Kinoko Kingdom or the Syndicate in the future, there’s an even higher chance, in that situation, that c!Dream would be offered protection, which is also important; there is no healing from trauma without the knowledge of safety, to some degree.

So, this was an essay as to why I think c!Dream’s recovery and redemption (one needs to come before the other, naturally) is not only extremely possible but also could be pulled off well and have a positive impact on both the characters, and the audience.

How To Tag Stucky Fics Part 3: Additional Tags

The Additional Tags are probably the hardest to fill out, but also the most important! All of the other fields are pretty straightforward when it comes to what you need to put in, but here? It’s the Wild West! You can pretty much write as much or as little as you want, but those tags are really gonna be the ones that will let potential readers know what is in your fic. In fact, they’re probably as important as your summary

If you want an easy reminder of what to tag for, keep in mind the W’s: WHO, WHAT, WHEN, and WHERE?

Under a read more because this is long!

Who

Character traits

We’ve already settled which characters are appearing in your fic, now it’s time to tell us more about WHO they are. This can include:

Physical traits

Personality traits

Jobs

Sexuality and other sex-related stuff

Religion

Nationality

Disabilities and mental illnesses

Fantasy creatures: vampire, werewolf, angel and demon… you get the gist.

MCU specific stuff

etc.

In my opinion, these tags are useful if the characteristic in question is something that is memorable, important with regards to the plot, something that defines the character in your story specifically, or something that differs from canon. I don’t really need to know that your fic contains some Shy Bucky Barnes if it’s not somewhat important to the story; you probably don’t need to tag for “British Peggy Carter” since thats just the default canon, but you could tag “American Peggy Carter” if she’s American in your AU!

I’ve mentioned a lot of them in my Comprehensive List of Stucky Tags post, but it’s not actually a complete list! If you want to know all of the canon tags existing for a specific character: go on AO3 and click on the Search tab on top of the page > Tags > Enter the character’s name > Select “Freeform” in the list > Click “canonical”.

And besides, if you can’t find a canonical tag for what you want, you can always invent one! Just remember: if you wanna create a freeform tag for a character, please make sure to use the characters’ LAST NAME too, in order to help tag wranglers! For example: if you want to tag for Steve having black hair, you should write something like “Steve Rogers has black hair”, and not just “Steve has black hair”, because at the moment there are 279 canonical “Steve” character tags so… who knows which Steve you’re talking about? XD

As for some things specific to the MCU, again, I’ve listed a lot of them in my Comprehensive List of Stucky Tags post, but I would tag especially anything that differs from canon, for example, “Steve Rogers as the Winter Soldier” or “Bucky Barnes as Captain America”. You can check out the post if you wanna have an idea of the canonical tags that already exist, but once again, you can always create your own tags and let the wranglers deal with it! :P Just make sure to use the characters’ last name in your tag.

Another tip: if there’s a dichotomy in the character roles or attributes, or opposite roles/positions between the characters, I would make sure to tag them both! For example:

Don’t just tag “Alpha/Beta/Omega Dynamics”: also tag Alpha Bucky Barnes, Omega Steve Rogers, or vice-versa

Don’t just tag “BDSM”: also tag Dom Steve Rogers, Sub Bucky Barnes, or vice-versa

Don’t just tag “Alternate Universe - Angels & Demons”: also tag Angel Steve Rogers, Demon Bucky Barnes, or vice-versa

etc.

Relationships

Why am I talking about relationships again, you say? Haven’t we covered that in Part 2 of the series? Yes I did. But here’s a little reminder of what I said then:

“Any side pairings/friendships can go in the Additional Tags field (for example: Minor Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov or Steve Rogers & Bucky Barnes Friendship).”

So there’s a few types of relationships that you can consider here:

Friendships: you can decide wether you want to mention the friendship in the Relationships field, in the Additional Tags field, or both. That’s your choice!

Past relationships, minor/side relationships: I personally would put them only in the Additional Tags field (NOT in the Relationship field), and here’s why:

Putting “past” or “minor” or “side” or whatever else qualifier in front of your ship in the Relationships field makes it a non-canonical tag (only the Additional tags can be non-canonical, or “freeform”. Like I’ve said in Part 2: try to only use canonical tags for the Fandom, Relationship, and Characters fields). That means that your tag is gonna be made a synonym of a canon tag. For example: the non-canonical “(Past) Peggy Carter/Steve Rogers” tag that a few people have used is a synonym of the canon “Peggy Carter/Steve Rogers” tag. That means that those past Peggy/Steve fics appear in the Steve/Peggy tag. Are people looking for Steggy fics likely to want to read past Steggy fics? You tell me...

If you’re tagging with the canon tag, but the couple is only a side/minor pairing, it might annoy people who are looking for fics in that tag and keep seeing fics that are not about their ship. This is especially true if the ship is less popular in the fandom.

So TLDR in my opinion: tag your main couple (if you’re writing a romance) or your main friendship/platonic relationship (if you’re writing a Gen fic) in the Relationship field, and tag everything else in the Additional Tags field.

POV

You can specify from which POV your fic is written from. Personally, I would pay attention to this mostly if your POV differs from the classic “3rd person” Steve or Bucky POV. Some existing tags tags to give you an idea:

This is pretty self-explanatory, but you want to tell your readers what’s in your story! What’s happening? What’s the plot about? What are some specific subjects/themes your story contains?

When I think about genres, I always picture the FF.net categories lol XD. But it’s actually a good way to look at it!Here’s a few examples on AO3:

On top of that, we want to know what kind of relationship your ship has in this fic! What are they to each other? What’s their progression? Here’s a few examples:

It can be hard to know what to tag with regards to triggers. I’d say better safe than sorry, and be open to suggestions and comments from your readers, especially with triggers.

Here’s a few examples to give you an idea what to tag for, which are taken from this great triggers list, but I definitely suggest you take a look at this post and bookmark it for whenever you need to tag your fics!

Violence:

Death: main/minor character death, animal death, child death...

Suicide: suicide attempt, suicidal thoughts, suicidal “insert character name”, ...

Abuse: child abuse, domestic abuse, sexual abuse, emotionnal abuse, gaslighting...

Assault

Torture

Kidnapping

Stalking

Sex:

Rape/Sexual assault/Non con

Dub con

Incest

Specific sex acts: like @kiragecko says in the post I linked: “some people search for, others want to avoid”.

Specify if your characters are being Safe Sane and Consensual or not when engaging in kinky sex.

Health:

Drugs and/or Alcohol

Food

Illnesses (physical or mental)

Pregnancy: mpreg, miscariage

Self-harm

Panic attacks, PTSD, dissociation

Phobias:

Any phobias that your character(s) have and are specifically mentioned/depicted in your fic

Common phobias: spiders, clowns, hospitals...

Gross content:

Gore

Bodily fluids

Smut

I’ve said it above in the triggers section, but you can tag sexual acts appearing in your story as a way to both attract readers who are looking for them and help readers who want to avoid them.

If your story has a lot of smut, you might be reluctant to tagging all of them in fear of making your tag list very long. I would always at least indicate in your tags that there’s Sexual Content in your fic; then, you could do like I’ve suggested with the Warnings and add something like “more info about specific sexual acts in the author’s note” to your tags, and make a detailed list of sexual acts in your authors’ note.

MCU

In my post about Stucky tags, I made a list of a lot of tags regarding the MCU movies. Not all of them of course, this list was mainly focused on movies where Stucky would appear, but you get the gist. We want to know WHEN in the MCU your fic is happening.

I’m not gonna list every single MCU movie and all of their tags, but basically you have a few options:

Pre-movie

Movie

Movie mid/end credit scenes

Post-movie

Movie compliant

Not Movie compliant

Canon divergence

Canon divergence - post movie

Some movies also have specific tags for their trailers. I would recommend using the trailer tag if you are indeed writing your fic based on the trailer of a movie that isn’t out yet (you could also add the movie’s specific “spoiler” tag too while you’re at it!) in order for people to be able to avoid spoilers if they want to.

Moreover, in the case of movies that are canonically happening in another time, you could also add the relevant tags if it’s pertinent! (for example, with The First Avenger: 1930s or World War II). You can also refer to events that happened within the MCU (example: Battle of New York (Marvel)).

Alternate Universe

Whatever era or time your fic is happening in, there’s probably a tag for that! There’s a tag for every decade of the 20th century and pretty much every century too. Is it a Victorian, Ancient Rome, or a Future fic?

But even if it’s just a simple Alternate Universe - Modern Setting with No Powers … there are tags for that too! :P

If there’s a specific historical/fictional event that your story is centered around, you could tag it too! For example: PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics, World War I, 2008 United States Presidential Election, Battle of Hogwarts, 75th Hunger Games, etc.

Don’t forget your holidays! Christmas, Valentine's Day, Halloween, to name a few...

Where

Self-explanatory again, but where is your story taking place? :P Again, maybe not the most important tag category to consider, but I would use it especially if the story is taking place in a specific/unusual place for the canon or your ship. See examples below!

MCU

Alternate universe

(Reminder: There’s sooooooooooo many different Alternate Universe tags!)

If your AU is taking place in a different country/city, you can mention it! You could either go with the AU tag or just the tag for the place itself. For example: Alternate Universe - Canada or Canada.

But it can also be even more precise than that! Stuck in a cabin during a snowstorm? There’s Cabin Fic! Steve and Bucky are men of the Night’s Watch? Maybe tag Castle Black! You get the gist ;)

And lastly...

Format

They’ve been texting throughout the day.

They’ve been texting, and Alex has been insisting that she should stay with Lena, take care of Lena. That she’s fine.

Well, that she’ll be fine eventually.

Even after she and Maggie’d had sex, even after Maggie had left and Alex had broken.

She’d insisted to her sister that she was fine.

But she wasn’t.

She wasn’t fine.

She was exactly what Kara said she’d be.

Broken and drinking in a bar.

Destroyed.

Useless.

Well, Kara hadn’t gone that far, necessarily, but it translated the same way in Alex’s head.

She should be stronger than this. Stronger than... herself.

And she reminds Kara, the moment she gets to the bar.

She reminds Kara, and Kara’s apology is immediate, right after her call to J’onn.

“Alex, you know I... I should never have said that to you. Compared my... thing to your relationship. I shouldn’t have -- “

“You didn’t do this, Kara,” Alex interrupts her, angling another empty shot glass toward her sister for emphasis. “I’m the one who ruined everything, not you.”

“You didn’t ruin anything, Alex, you just -- “

“I just told the woman I love that she wasn’t enough, just like everyone else in her damn life ever has.”

Kara blinks and she shakes her head because Alex’s shoulders have started to shake, her calm, steely composure starting to crack.

But then Alex blinks and shakes her head and orders another line of shots, and her calm, cold, drunken composure is back.

“You loved her well, Alex. You loved her so well. You’re not her parents. You didn’t abandon her. You have needs and she has different needs, and it’s terrible, but it’s... it’s what she said a few days ago, right? Better now than five years down the road when your lives are even more entangled?”

Alex shudders and drinks and Kara bites her lip and signals for water.

“And two club sodas, please,” a gruff voice joins them, and Alex doesn’t look up at her space father. She can’t.

And he doesn’t ask her to. He just covers his hand with his own and sits. Sits and loves her, and tries to radiate it to a non-telepathic being as much as he can.

“Club sodas?” yet another voice enters the mix. “Not for us. Can we get two glasses of merlot, please?”

Alex blinks. “Lena, Sam, what -- “

“Ruby’s with a sitter, and -- “

“But Lena, you -- “

“Have been proven innocent and am getting those children the best care they can possibly get. And now, Alex Danvers, you need...” She hesitates before she uses the word, but Kara’s pinky brushes hers, and it gives her courage. “Friends. You need friends. And you have them.”

Alex shudders, and J’onn knows. “Your brothers are with Maggie, Alex. They’re taking good care of her, and they send all their love to you. They just wanted her to know that she’s not -- “

“Abandoned,” Alex’s voice breaks, and finally, so does her body.

She looks up at J’onn like she’s just realizing he’s there. “J’onn, you could... could you? J’onn.” Her voice breaks, because suddenly she’s drowning in the feeling of waking up tomorrow without her.

She’s standing, now, and she’s half-yelling, now, and Kara’s holding Lena’s hand and Lena’s reaching for Sam’s, because J’onn is just wrapping his arms around her.

He’s wrapping his arms around his eldest earth daughter and holding tight.

Holding tight even when she pushes, even when she hits.

“I don’t want to remember! I don’t want to remember the way she says my name and I don’t wanna remember the gross way she eats bagels or the gross way she takes her coffee or the way she kisses me, because she’s just gonna be kissing someone else, someone else is going to be touching that birthmark on the small of her back and someone else is going to be smelling her shampoo all over their pillow and I can’t, J’onn, I can’t do it, I can’t, I can’t, please, please, don’t -- “

“Alex, listen to me. Alex. Alex, please.” And it’s something in the pleading in his voice, something in the tears streaming down Kara’s face, that makes her pause, that makes her bite her lip hard enough to make herself stop ranting, to make herself breathe.

“Alex, those memories are sacred. The moments you and Maggie had together are sacred, and they always will be. You’ll always have grown from them. They will always have changed you. If I took them away from you, you wouldn’t be the same, Alex. And I love the person that you are, the person that you’ve become. Erasing that would help in the short term, but it would be erasing such a big part of yourself. And that... I would never do that to a child of mine.”

Lena’s head is on Kara’s shoulder, now, and Sam’s is on Lena’s. They all nod softly at Alex, and she shudders one more time before letting herself collapse forward into J’onn’s arms.

“I got you,” Kara moves forward to remind her sister, kissing her hair as she cries into J’onn’s chest, and Alex nods helplessly, because she can barely breathe and she certainly can’t stand up on her own, but it turns out she doesn’t have to.

Because her family’s got her.

Weekly Voltron Fic Recs #45

It’s been more than a year since I started this weekly rec list. No, I didn’t quite do it every week, otherwise there would be 52 now, but I’m pretty impressed that I kept it up this well. I honestly wasn’t sure how long I would keep wanting to do this, but my obsession with Voltron fanfic is still going pretty strong, though it’s waxed and waned at times. Let’s see if we get another year out of it. Thank you to everyone who likes and reblogs these rec lists, and especially for reading the fics and letting the authors know that you appreciate them. That’s why the list exists.

This is stuff I like, and I have a huge bias toward Lance, hurt/comfort, and general fluff, in that order. Gen unless otherwise noted. Please comment on the fics if you read and enjoy them!

Returns and Lost Belongings by Itsjez Words: 8,986 Author’s Summary: Shiro curled up in his small bunk, legs tight to his chest as he stared at the control panel on the wall opposite. Even now, days since he’d “returned”, everything felt different. Oh sure it wasn’t as if he’d been gone for a year or worse ten, but still. Just where had he gone?That question weighed most on Shiro’s mind. My Comments: Angsty and suspenseful post-Season 2 fic in which Zarkon is an incredibly present and dangerous threat not only to Shiro, but to the entire team. Great resolution and great comfort.

Back to the Future (With a Dash of the Past) by SteamPowered514, theeyesofthestorm1848 for (the entire discord) Words: 11,914 Author’s Summary: Haggar gets mad, messes up, and sends the Paladins back in time one day before they leave earth to fight the good fight against Zarkon. The paladins get to say goodbye, make their peace, and go back to their lions for the first time again. Too bad Commander Mitch Iverson sees the dramatic changes in his students and jumps to the conclusion that they have to be alien spies. My Comments: I love the fact the paladins get a choice time, and they want to go. They have time to prepare, time to grab hold of each other and jump. Hopefully everything will go better this time around. The addition of a tenacious and genuinely concerned Iverson was a very fun touch. What a great fic.

Torture: Shiro 5. Insomnia: Hunk 6: Poison: Allura 7: Head Injury: Coran 8: Free Day: Pidge & Coran My Comments: Can you believe I’m STILL finding gems from Whump Week to rec? Good grief, what a gift. Enjoy this lovely variety pack of whump.

The Space Race Is Over (And I’ll Never Get to The Moon) by Schistosity Words: 14,939 Author’s Summary: The garrison trio stumble into trouble on an undercover mission after they uncover a surprising and eerily familiar piece of space junk. But with the harsh reminder of how far they are from home comes an opportunity to, in a small way, help it. A fic about kids who love space, miss home, and don’t know correct museum etiquette. My Comments: This is such an incredibly fun and good fic. There’s some angst, some action, some humor, some great characterization, but mostly it’s just about how cool space is and how cool humans are for wanting to be in space. It brought up a lot of RL feelings for me, haha, things I feel when watching videos of shuttles launching or visiting the Air & Space Smithsonian. Highly, highly recommended.

Swear On It by EdgarAllenPoet Words: 7,449 Author’s Summary: “Geez, Keith. You kiss your mother with that mouth?” My Comments: Absolutely wonderful Dads of Marmora fic with a sometimes angsty, mostly humorous Lance POV and wonderfully protective Kolivan. And curse words. So many curse words.

A Former Shade of Blue by F-117 Nighthawk (F117_Nighthawk) Words: 8,590 Author’s Summary: The Blue Paladin crash-lands on Earth after Alfor sends the Lions away and is trapped in her healing pod for ten-thousand Altean years. When she wakes, she must come to terms with the Galra Empire. This was started before season three was released. You can take the three generations of paladins headcanon from my cold dead hands. My Comments: Really angsty and action-packed look at the life of the former Blue Paladin, Keith’s mother. I’m still kinda sad this theory got jossed, but at least we have fun fics.

Catch Me If You Can by wingedflower Words: 3,485 Author’s Summary: Hunk only wanted to make a pie and Lance only wanted to be a good friend. What could possibly go wrong? My Comments: Aww, so cute! There are not NEARLY enough fics in this fandom of Hunk and Lance just hanging out and being adorable together. I’m begging you, fandom, more like this please.

Too Little Too Late by EdgarAllenPoet Words: 3,890 Author’s Summary: “That was where Kolivan found Keith, spacesuit big enough to pool around his feet and flap over his hands, both of which were curled tightly around a sword as he stood in front of Pidge like the fiercest little warrior Kolivan had ever seen.” My Comments: Urgh my heart. Tiny, deaged Keith is distrusting and wary of adults, probably for some extremely good reasons, but Kolivan manages to win him over in the most Blade of Marmora way possible. The ending gave me cavities, and I’m happy about it.

It’s a Losing Battle - No Need to Feel Ashamed by kyanve Words: 6,849 Author’s Summary :While the Castle’s getting its final repairs to leave, Shiro spends some time in the Arusian village helping rebuild, and finds out one of the Arusian elders has been around long enough to know better than to believe his assertions that he’s “fine” - and that the Black Lion is stubborn, opinionated, and also not falling for it. (Occurs around chapter 3 of Truce.) My Comments: Stand-alone companion to a previously recced fic. I loved this view of Shiro and Black early in the series, and the worldbuilding for the Arusians was really cool. This author seriously excels at the worldbuilding, I highly recommend their stuff.

A Life in Pink and Blue by Sand_Cursive Words: 4,796 Author’s Summary: So long in stasis had done a number on her faculties, on the only ones that mattered, and for a few brief, blissful moments she had forgotten that there was a war. That her people were being decimated, that the horrors of the galaxy had descended upon her home, that she had great cause to be afraid. An Allura Character Study My Comments: A great look at Allura’s thoughts both pre-series and during some key moments in Season 1. Good backstory and worldbuilding for Altea, too.

Singularity by acestriker Words: 8,201 Author’s Summary: Nothing feels right anymore, and Keith finds an unlikely ally in Matt Holt. Things go downhill from there. A face gets punched, and the team is in tatters. (formerly “Unravel.” I thought this title fit better.) My Comments: Angsty post-season three fic with Matt and Keith teaming up to figure out what’s wrong with “Shiro.” It’s a little rough on everyone, but I really enjoyed the relationship between those two, very supportive no matter what.

Let Me Be Your Shelter by StarryFeathers Words: 5,780 Author’s Summary: What happens when the one who always saves needs the saving? They are used to following, used to him doing the saving, but this time it’s their turn to bring him home. Alternatively: Shiro should really trust his instincts but the Paladins make him proud. My Comments: Really great, tense fic in which the other paladins fight against time to save an injured Shiro, plus some backstory for Keith and Shiro. Very emotional.

A Bone To Pick by Ahhuya Words: 9,557 Author’s Summary: It started as a tingling sensation. Keith shoved it off as training in the Red Lion for too long. Soon enough however, he started to lose control of both his own body and his lion. My Comments: I’ve never seen this particular way to whump a character in fanfiction before. Poor Keith is much too stubborn for his own good, but his motivations and actions make sense. Still, he has to accept help in the end.

Get What You Need by BossToaster (ChaoticReactions) Words: 3,114 Author’s Summary:“Shiro taught me everything I know about being a pilot.” A look back at the beginning. My Comments: Thoroughly enjoyable fic about Shiro giving Hunk some pointers, not just on piloting but how to deal with things in general. I absolutely adore how they were help each other here and the development of their relationship throughout. Extremely satisfying.

To Love a Lion by aurumdalseni (kyo_chan) Words: 1,403 Author’s Summary: Just as important as the bond among paladins is the bond the paladins have with their Lions. In this, a kiss for each of the Lions who have accepted them for who they are. My Comments: Sweet and short collection of bonding moments between the lions and their paladins.

Space Tortuga by ozbian Words: 1,379 Author’s Summary: Allura chats with an alien monarch, then decides to let her hair up. (What happens on Space Tortuga stays on Space Tortuga) My Comments: You know what’s more fun than diplomatic Allura? Allura deciding to go, “Screw diplomacy, I’m gonna have fun now.”

Don’t Commit Felonies, Kids by fandomsnstuff Words: 2,858 Author’s Summary: When Sam Holt gets rescued from the labor camp the galra put him in, he’s reunited with his daughter a whole lot sooner than he expected. My Comments: Wonderful Holt reunion with some great banter to lighten it up at the end.

Garrison Trio for Life by A_Zap Words: 1,261 Author’s Summary: Pidge had made her decision: she was going to stay. That doesn’t mean that she stops reflecting over her decision and her team as she sits in front of Lance’s cryopod. Luckily, the third member of the Garrison Trio knows what to say. My Comments: Nice missing scene with Hunk and Pidge talking while Lance is healing in Season 1.

The Moments When You’re (Not) Alone by Voidfish Words: 2,809 Author’s Summary: Five times Lance comforted the team (and one time the team comforted him) My Comments: Sweet fic, all the way around. Love everyone being open with each other.

Take A Break by WildWolf25 Words: 2,223 Author’s Summary: They drew a shuddering breath and released it. “And no matter what I do, no matter how much code I write or what kind of enhancements I make or how many numbers I crunch in whatever way… none of this looks good for us. None of it. And… I’m scared. I’m terrified, and I don’t know what to do besides keep trying to make more improvements to the lions, decrypt more Galra tech, do more even though I know that what I’m doing will barely even make a dent.” They sniffed and leaned into his hold more. “Why does the universe have to be so big?” They asked, voice watery. Lance hugged them from the side and rubbed their opposite arm. “I don’t have an answer for that.” He said quietly. “None of us do.” Pidge groused. “That’s the problem.” Lance took a deep breath. “I’m scared too. We’re all scared.” (Lance finds Pidge working late again due to stress, and does what he can to help) My Comments: Aw, Pidge gets herself worked up thinking about the odds of their fight, and Lance offers some comfort. Lovely fic.

In Your Arms by Copiel Words: 6,286 Author’s Summary: In which Lance gets sick, the team takes care of him, and Keith realizes a thing or two. (And yes, there is some cradling in arms sprinkled throughout) My Comments: Endgame Klance. I just love feverish, delusional Lance and a worried team so much.

Beneath a Sky of Orange Leaves by Zurela Words: 36,366 Author’s Summary: Thanks to the druids, Keith and Lance are launched through a corrupted portal and crash onto a mysterious planet. Stranded, alone, and with no one else to rely on but each other, they quickly realize that rivalries don’t last long in survival situations. My Comments: Engame Klance. Great characterization and bonding in here, some very deep discussions about why Keith and Lance both push others away when they should be seeking in help. In the middle, Lance get desperately sick and Keith has to care for him. Excellent survival fic with teamwork and dumb boys learning to take care of each other.

Rough Week by taylor_tut Words: 2,517 Author’s Summary: It’s been a rough week for the paladins, especially Lance. My Comments: Lance is too self-sacrificing, and too stubborn, and his team loves him very, very much.

Turn Up the Heat by Copiel Words: 2,546 Author’s Summary: Lance just wants someone to make his room warmer, and he gets more than he bargained for. My Comments: I’m always up for weak, feverish Lance and a worried team. This is a great fic for scratching that itch.

I love the relationship you have between the reader and Sam here, as well as Dean continuing to barge in throughout! His enthusiasm for haircuts always makes me laugh, too.

Simple Man by @hanny-writes-spn (Reader x Bartender!Sam) - Oooh, the intrigue! I loved this a lot, and I always forget that this whole bartender!Sam thing truly is canonical, so this was really fun to read and remember this part of the series. The reader and Sam were so fun and cute together, and I would totally read more of this!

Pieces of Us - New Orleans by @torn-and-frayed (Reader x Dean) - This was adorable, and I loved the reader joking around while Dean was so grumpy. It made it all super fun! I can’t wait for more parts of this drabble/mini-series!

Scavenger Hunt by @just-another-busy-fangirl (Reader x Dean) - I loved this! Not only was the concept behind it original and fun, but I loved Dean’s reaction and the reader’s friends.

Hopeful by @percywinchester27 (Reader x Dean) - I think my heart just grew three sizes as I read this. It was so sweet and so simple and just... ugh. I loved this.

Sympathy Boner by @pinknerdpanda (Reader x Dean) - This was hilarious! Poor Dean dug himself into a hole, but that last part made me laugh! The reader had just the right response for that, and I wish I had that good of timing!

Imagine always loving the jokes Cas always tries to tell you to cheer you up, even if you don’t understand them... by @supernaturalfreewill (Reader x Cas) - This was adorable and so true to Cas’ character! I wish this kind of thing was written in more Reader x Cas fics because I think Cas telling angelic jokes to the reader is both hilarious and realistic for their relationship.

Wing Man by @pinknerdpanda (Reader x Cas) - Sorry I couldn’t tag you! This was fantastic and I loved the ending! The whole thing with Dean egging Cas on, as well as the reader being snippy and rude gave everything a lot of color and character. Great job!

I’m Here by @deansleather (Reader x Cas) - I love sweet, protective Cas. I think it’s such an important part of his characterization and you wrote it so well! I needed this, so thank you for the beautifully written Cas fluff!

The Lies We Tell Ourselves by @webcricket (Reader x Cas) - Reassuring!Cas seems to be a big thing lately, but I’m not complaining. This was beautifully written and I loved Cas in this. Great job!!!

Somewhere, Someday, Part Fifteen by @jotink78 (Reader x Sam) - This was so heartbreaking, and definitely be sure to read the warnings for this one! You wrote everything so fantastically well, and I’m really curious to see what will happen in the next part with the boys...

That Would Be Enough by @saxxxology (Reader x Sam) - Heed the warnings! I’ve always wanted to read a fic that dealt with Sam’s feelings/thoughts about these things, and this was perfect. You handled everything so well and it was beautifully written. I loved this!

What If? by @moonlitskinwalker (Reader x Boyking!Sam) - I want more Sam! As much as I love Dean and the reader together—and I would like to say that I think they make a fantastic pair and I hope they get closer through this because I would love to see that—I want to see my boyking!Sam again. You write him so well (just as well as the reader and Dean in this), and I’m excited to see how he shows up next, especially because of the part where “you don’t find Sam, he finds you.” Also, I loved the appearance of Bobby!

Poisonous Soul by @super-not-naturall (Eventual Reader x Sam) - I’m so excited to see what happens next in this series! It’s so intriguing and I’m DYING to know why the reader got kidnapped, as well as how she and Sam will get together! (Also, I go to a Christian college like the reader, so that little detail made me so happy! That’s not something you see in fics a lot!)

A Dog is a Dog by @moonlitskinwalker (Reader x Sam) - I had totally forgotten about this series until you posted the new part, and so when I read it all over again I remembered why I liked it so much! This series is so original and so much fun to read, and I can’t wait to find out more about Cerberus and the reader’s relationship, as well as see the developing relationship between her and Sam. Plus, who doesn’t want Sam to get a dog?

Stroke of Luck by @percywinchester27 (Reader x Dean) - I’m so excited to see where this series goes! I have so many questions about the reader’s past, and I can’t wait to see what will happen with the case in town, and with the reader trying to avoid the Winchesters!

Invisible by @just-another-busy-fangirl (Reader x Dean) - They finally realized what I’ve been thinking since the very beginning! I’m so in love with this series and I can’t wait to see if, or when, they’re able to reverse the curse! I’m also really worried that something is going to happen on this hunt...

World’s Best Dad by @luci-in-trenchcoats (Reader x Dad!Dean) - Squeeee! I love Dad!Dean series and I’m so glad I found this one! It’s adorable, and the reader is so unique and brings a lot to the story, which I think can be hard to do when you’re also writing such dynamic characters like Dean and his daughter. I can’t wait for more parts (if there are more)!

Fragments by @torn-and-frayed (Reader x Dean) - Oh, man. I don’t know if I would’ve given the reader that necklace. That seems like a time bomb waiting to go off and it’s making me so nervous! I just have this sickening feeling in my stomach that tells me you’re going to do something horrible with it. I’m just not feeling it. I’m not. I don’t want to be hurt!!!

When They Can’t See by @luci-in-trenchcoats (Reader x Dean) - Wow, this was such a great series! I love Dean getting cared for, and you wrote his internal pain showing through in such a way that it could definitely have been an episode of the show. The ending was perfect, so great job!

The River Deep by @femmewinchester (Reader x Dean) - I WANT TO KNOW MORE!!! Please tell me there are more parts I can catch up on because there’s so much more that I want to know!!! This is so intriguing and I’ve never read a fic like this before. I love it!

Finding Home by @willowing-love (Reader x Cas) - This is such an amazing series! I love time travel fics, especially to this era, and I think Cas is such a great character to be used for both time periods. You write them both so well and so distinct and I absolutely adore it. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Urban Legends by @sasquatchandleatherjacket (No Pair) - This was really interesting to read, and I would highly recommend that all fanfic writers who plan to write anything with a monster!reader read this because it puts a lot of things into perspective if you want to make the Winchesters well-known in the supernatural community in your fic!

My Savior - Epilogue by @saxxxology (Sam x Ruby) - I loved this whole series, and the ending of this was absolutely perfect. Even if you’re not a big fan of Sam x Ruby, I would suggest reading this because it’s super original and just an amazing series! I don’t even typically read this pairing and I adored it!

Fife by @lipstickandwhiskey (Reader x Sam) - I loved this! It’s definitely realistic because I think the Winchesters would often think the police departments were dumb and/or lacking, and Sam’s reaction and lines at the very end made my Sam!girl heart beat a little faster. Great job!

Pretty Darn Nice by @lipstickandwhiskey (Reader x Sam) - Ahhh, this was so amazing! I love when people write Sam getting the comfort he needs (because I’m convinced he needs it and never gets it), so this made me smile. And to see that you wrote it and tagged me up at the top made me feel just as loved as both Sam and the reader felt in your story!

For the Best by @d-s-winchester (Reader x Dean) - You write Dean so well! The ending for this made me all happy inside, even though there were little tiny bits of angsty feelings sprinkled around throughout the fic. Great job!!! Please keep writing!

Now You Don’t by @plaidstiel-wormstache (Reader x Sam) - I love Now You See Me, so I was really excited to read this after I saw the description! I think you incorporated all the magic stuff really well, and the whole explanation of what the reader did on the hunt was genius!

Not only did you use the gifs of Misha so, so well (because those gifs are enough to make anyone happy), but your Cas just makes me feel so safe and happy!

The Guest of Honor by @revwinchester (Reader x Sam) - This was amazing and super fluffy! Thanks for tagging me, because I loved the overall idea of it and you wrote it so well on top of that. The reader’s personality compared to the atmosphere of the party and her family made me want to laugh, and Sam’s little freak-out about not being good enough for her was true to his character. Great job!

Locksmith by @mysupernaturalfics (Reader x Dean) - While I don’t read smut, I know that the second part of this includes it. If that’s something y’all read, I would recommend it because this part of the miniseries was AWESOME. All I can say is that I would definitely be locking myself out of things more often if I knew Dean was coming to my rescue. Everyone’s emotions in this were so easy to feel myself; you wrote it really well and I’m sure the second part is just as amazing!!

This Car (His Name is Riley) by @writer-picks-the-music (Reader x Dean) - This was so, so cute! I love dogs a lot, and this made me smile. Dean’s definitely a sucker for whatever would make the reader happy, so watching him interact with Riley at the end made my heart melt. Bonus points for having Sam with Riley, too!

She Can Hear You by @not-moose-one-shots (Reader x Sam) - I’m always so fascinated by fics including deaf characters, so this was awesome to read! You did a great job portraying the reader’s excitement at getting her hearing back, and all the comments from Sam were soooo cute.

Portrait by @just-another-busy-fangirl (Princess!Reader x Prince!Sam) - This was short and sweet, and I loved every word of it. It was absolutely adorable and I’ve always loved medieval AUs, so this was perfect! I’m so glad I found it!

Wet Paws by @trexrambling (Reader x Dean) - I don’t know why there are lots of dog one shots lately, but I am not complaining. This was so, so, so cute!! The puppy sounds paws-itively (hahahhaha) precious, and the beginning with Sam was so true to his character. This was fluffy from top to bottom and I adored it!!

Dive by @kaz2y5-imagines (Reader x Dean) - This was sooo incredibly romantic/cute, despite the little bits of angst due to Dean’s thoughts and pining. Nonetheless, I loved it! Listening to the song made it even better, too. (Also, I loved the bartender! He cracked me up.)

In-Between

Alone in the Woods by @whispersandwhiskerburn (No Pairing) - This was so ingenious! The concept was really weird when I read the description, but you wrote it so well and I just kept wanting to learn more about the world they were in! I also loved the incorporation of the song; it’s such a good song and one of my favorite songs from musicals. If you ever wrote a sequel or drabbles about this, I’d love to read them!

Unexpected Part 2 by @hanny-writes-spn (Reader x Sam) - I loved this! You wrote everything so, so well, and I could really feel everything that the characters were feeling. Sam would be such a great dad, ugh. I agree with the reader on that.

Dear Theodosia by @saxxxology (Reader x Sam) - I love your Sam writing, I can’t say that enough! The ending of this was perfect, and I loved every word of it. You somehow managed to make me want to listen to Hamilton, which I’ve never wanted before. Great job!

Imagine Getting a Call Out of the Blue From Sam and Dean Calling in a Favor by @kaz2y5-imagines (No Pairing) - This was great! The little things like Sam ignoring Dean and the fact that the reader kept commenting on Dean’s lack of tact made me smile.

I Wanna Take Care of You by @jotink78 (Reader x Dean) - It’s not common for me to read a lot of fics about readers with epilepsy because there aren’t a lot out there, so brownie points to you for writing one! It can be hard to write about things like this (I’ve tried several things myself), and I think you did a really great job! This was interesting to read and Dean’s reactions to everything were spot on.

Shots Fired by @torn-and-frayed (Pharmacist!Reader x FBI Agent!Dean) - This was great! I loved how Dean was prepared for it all, and the ending fluffy parts made me all happy inside. I hate to hear that most of that stuff has happened to you, though!! It made me so frustrated because the customers were being dumb, I felt for the reader!!

Prison Break - Part 2 by @torn-and-frayed (Reader x Dean) - I loved this! The first part was amazing enough, but this was such a great way to end it! (If this is even the end; I wouldn’t be opposed to more parts.) I loved the fluff at the end, as well as how you showed them bonding when she was in isolation. The angst in the middle was also so, so well written!!

Taken (Part 12) by @writingbeautifulmen (Reader x Dean, Reader x Sam) - This series is so amazing, and this part was so beautifully written that I had to read it a few times just to take it all in. I loved how you showed both Sam and Dean’s different reactions to John’s death, plus how the reader interacted with them based on that! This was so, so good!!

Angst

Betrayed by @percywinchester27 (Reader x Sam) - This was heartbreaking! I loved it though, and I made sure that after I was caught up with the episodes I went back and read it. I love your writing and this was no exception to your wonderful-ness!

Somewhere, Someday by @jotink78 (Reader x Sam, Reader x OC) - This series is crazy! It’s definitely something that could be triggering so make sure you read the warnings, but I’m so intrigued by it. I love the way you’re writing how the reader is feeling and how she’s changing over time... It’s so crazy and it terrifies me as much as it makes me want to read more.

The New Princess by @curliesallovertheplace (Reader x Prince!Dean) - I love this series and I was so excited when I saw you’d posted a new part! It’s so exciting to see their relationship forming, and Dean cracks me up. He’s such a rebel prince and that makes me happy. I’m so glad you’ve kept all his little characteristic nuances in your writing; he’s adorable and charming and I love the way you write him!

If It Can Bleed by @imadeangirl-butimsamcurious (Reader x Dean) - This is such a cool idea! The reader’s character is amazing and I can’t wait to learn more about her personality/characteristics/abilities, as well as her past. Plus, the relationship between her and Dean is not only complex, but it makes me happy inside! I hope everyone ends up okay, please keep writing and tagging me!

Escape by @lipstickandwhiskey (Reader x Dean) - Oh. My. Goodness. I love this series so much! The whole ***spoilers*** psychic thing along with the warning signal for it makes me so curious about the reader, and I can’t wait to see how her and Dean’s relationship develops!!

Just Another Case by @whispersandwhiskerburn (FBI Agent!Reader x Mechanic!Dean) - The pairing itself got me interested in this, but now I can’t wait to read more! The reader’s characterization is amazing and feisty, and Dean is staying absolutely true to character. Plus, I’m a sucker for SamJess. This oughta be good!

Cry Wolf by @moonlitskinwalker (Sister!Reader) - This is such an amazing series!! I can’t wait for more parts, the cliffhangers are killing me! I hope it doesn’t get too angsty, but I won’t complain if it does. Your writing floors me every time, and I’m always excited when I see that you’ve updated!

The Winchester Triplets - “What if Dean thought he should be doing... The Talk?” by @littlegreenplasticsoldier (Dad!Dean) - This cracked. me. up. I loved it so much and I think I was crying because I was laughing so hard. This was amazing and I’m glad you wrote these little stories!

Hanged, Drawn, and Quartered by Foolscapper (on AO3) (Sam) - This was so, so good. It’s solely focused on what makes Sam who he is, and I loved the way that it explored that. It’s really unique and definitely something I’ve never seen before. If you’re a Sam!girl, especially one who likes angst, I would highly recommend this!

Beelzebub Has a Devil Put Aside for Me by @chestercbennington , @spnxbookworm , and @winchesterpooja (on AO3) (Sam) - This fic was also super unique and such a twisty mix of AU and canon! It incorporated the relationship between Lucifer and Sam about the apocalypse really well. If you like angst and are a Sam!girl, I’d recommend you read this one, too.

Apples by @jpadjackles (SamJess) - This was a little happy and a little sad. I love SamJess and I love the nostalgic way that you write how Sam thinks about it now, even if it does make me sad. Plus, the concept of him and his fancy shampoo just makes me smile. Great job, Bronwyn!
